Hey guys. first post. I'm not going to post the IP for respect to PDM, but my ([12o6]'s) server is up again. The server is based off of an Xbox.
We (Chad/scabs) installed a mod chip, flashed linux on it, installed DOD along with a few other games, and can host and even play off of the Xbox with our 1M DSL line. The Xbox allows you to plug a USB keyboard and mouse (with special adapters) into it. Just rocks.
Its a 12 man server, but can be increased with a memory upgrade to the Xbox (which will happen when chad gets around to it).
If you or anyone is looking for a cheap, compact server, email chad at chad@linuxbochs.com .
pic of the server is attatched. (green Xbox with display to the right)

An Xbox comes with 32MB of ram. This will support up to 16 players on a dedicated server without much loss. The upgrade to 64MB requires using a 32MB chip and soldering it to the underside of the motherboad oppposite the existing chip. Kind of sucky work considering that memory chips have like 100billion pins and you must keep the solder from touching other pins. not alot of room for mistakes. but with 62MB dedicated ram, it should run 25man easy, maybe up to 32players. We havn't done it yet, so we don't know the capabilities of the 64MB upgrade.
EDIT: these numbers are incorrect. see post below.

must be ram with very high MHz.
I was just looking on the steam forum for the rule of thumb for hardware, but they were talking about 40mb of ram for one player!
so any one! that deal sounds very cool considering they almost giving the xboxes away.
can't find that post no more on steam :(
found anoter one to
CPU: 800 8 ppl
RAM: 256MB
Server Size: 16ppl
CPU: 1200
RAM: 384MB
Server Size: 24ppl
CPU: 1600
RAM: 512MB
Server Size: 32ppl
CPU: 2200
RAM: 768MB
so it has to be atleast 800mhz internal clock speed I guess!
for the xbox ram

Xbox modifications are something I know at least 2 members of PDM have... I haven't gotten into upgrading the RAM at all but the Harddrive is now 100GB... Xecutor 1.3pro chips... Its quite fun.
Anyhoo... I have always wanted to put linux onto my xbox but I'm just too damn lazy...

Hey guys. Just talked to chad. i had my numbers a little wrong on the memory capacity.
a stock Xbox comes with 64MB. you can upgrade this to 128MB.
We figure the 64MB to be good through ~12-14players. (tested and works fine)
We figure the 128Mb will host 20-25 theoretically.
The reason for the good mem-to-player max is because of the linux based server. As chad was telling me, it has no windows environment to store in mem or anything. so straight memory to hosting DOD.
Chad does all Xbox mods including 250GB Harddisk (what he has on the server) and DVD burners.
You can host and stream movies, music and play emulated nintendo, snes and genesis games, save and play xbox games without the disk (rent and play 4ever). It's a cheap computer.
Chad goes by [12o6]ScAbS if ne of you have ever seen him around
I cant remember the IP, but it name is:
"[12o6] 24/7 DOD minnesota" or somthing of the like. i'll throw up the IP when i get home from work.

We played a "clan" skirmish against some clan 2 nights ago on it. 3:3 with ~80 ping all around. the clan sucked so we kicked them lol  :p
i've seen 12 players on it and it seemed to do fine. with much more than that, the 1MB DSL might start giving us problems. Tho i'm not sure what DSL speed chad's got it on now, but it used to be 1MB.
oh yeah....for the record. we aren't really a clan. We never practice togather. We're just a group of guys that like playing games (dod especially) together. 1206 is the street address where I used to live and where we play all the time. Since the start of it all, I've gotten married and moved, My bro (who lives there) is engaged, and chad moved to 1218 with another friend for more space. There are other people in the "clan" to, but noone else lived there. If you want to check it out, We play friday nights and saturday nights usually, if we feel like it.
